What should I look for in a Gym?
Use the following checklist as a guide when choosing your Fitness Centre or Studio.
- Ask them how long they have been in business.
- Is the gym an accredited member of R.E.P.S, NZ Fitness, Sfrito or another governing body?
- How much does the Gym charge?
- What facilities does the Gym have? Are all facilities included in the membership cost?
- Does the Gym require you to enter into a contract, and how do they enforce this?
- Can you transfer your membership if you are unable to use it? If so, is there a cost?
- If you are away or sick, can you put your membership on hold?
- Does the Gym include fitness assessments and programs as part of the membership or is there an added cost for these services?
- Are all staff up to date with first aid?
- Does the Gym have a policy on Health and Safety?
- Does the facility have professional indemnity insurance? Make sure they do. It covers them in the event that they are sued for negligence or breach of professional duty. This means if you have to take legal action against them for some reason, they will be insured against this. Ask for a copy of their insurance certificate covering them.
- Ask what privacy guidelines they follow when handling your information. They should comply with the Privacy Act.
If the Gym is unwilling to answer or seems bothered by these questions, find another facility.
